Previous company numbers -Mumbai Consulate

Hi,
I am planning to go for the Mumbai consulate for my H1B stamping in next month 1st week, I have overall 8 years experience, when i am filling my DS157 form, i have written the previous company phone number which was mentioned in my Appontment letter, that was not working now and the number was chagned.
My concerns is does i need to provide the number which was working right now or i need to mention the number in my Appointment letter, also can any one have ided why we need to submit the documents in 5 days advace to VFS office? is there any background check is done by VFS offcie? in that case i might be in problem due to the number is not working... Pls suggest me ...

this should not present any problems.

Unfortunately there have been so many cases of fraud in tha past with certificates degrees etc that they have to perform these checks in advance to ensure integrity of the system.
