Lay Off on H1B

If I am on H1B visa and my employer lays off without any notice, am I out of status immediately?
If that is the case, can I change my status from H1 to H4 if my wife is on H1B, and then back to H1B when I get a job? And, wen I chnage back to H1B, can I use my old visa or I wouldhave to apply for a new H1B visa.

... though you'll need that final H1B petition approval and can travel with your visa stamped in your passport.
