J1 and marriage

I am a US citizen. My fiance, who has never been to the US,
has just got a position as a post-doc in an American university. Which type of
visa should he apply for- J1, H1B or K3? We are quite baffled.

In my previous post, I meant should my fiance apply for J1, H1B, or K1 visa. How do I find out
if there will be a residency requirement with the J1? Do I need to hire a lawyer to get the H1B?
If we get the K1, is there a danger that my husband to be will be in the middle of the semester
when the 90 day initial work permit runs out and he has not gotten a new one?
