Voluntary work on H-4

Can a person who is on H-4(waiting for H-1 approval), work voluntarily(without getting paid) for a software company? If so, for how long?

You can do voluntary work as long as you want but you should not get paid for that.

If you are planning things like employer will pay for the time you worked as bonus once you get H1 approval, do not do that please as it would be illegal.
