Travel to India before visa expires

Hi,

My wife visa expires on 30 th Sep 2008.Today I came to know her employer didn't applied for the extension.I told her employer to stop the extension as my wife wants to travel to India before visa expires.
Can she travel India from Aug 2nd week to Sep 1st week without applying for extension .
Can she apply for extension after coming back in Sep 1st week.

Is there will be any problem at the immigration while returning.
