H1 & petition extension

I m currently in US.I have travelled in H1B.

have two questions

1) My H1 is getting expired on jan 2009,what is the prior required months to start the extension process?

2) I m planning an a vacation to India during the month of nov and dec 2008 to India.Can i go or not ?

Please advice me on my travel to india.

1. Can start as early as 6 months prior to expiration
2. Yes, you can go. But have your H1b approved before you go or come back and apply for extension with the new I-94 from POE.
