Go for premium processing on the H1b immediately. This will be the best option considering that your H1b is expiring and you will not be allowed inside without a I797/visa that has not expired.
You can get the petition mailed to you in India fine. No, travel does not invalidate your extension.

H1B Renewal query
Hi,
My H1B visa is expiring is on 1st Oct 08. I have applied for H1 B renewal but unfortunately I need to leave US to India for my marriage on 25th Oct 08.
I know I am surely not going to get my petition papers till then but I will be getting my Receipt# till then.
My concern is, can I go to India with the receipt# and get my petition there and thereafter get my H1B stamped in India? Do I loose the benefit of getting H1B extended visa if I travel out of the country after getting my receipt# but before getting my new petition?
