H1-B extension Pending Approval

I am currently on H-1B. My visa/1-94 is till 10/15/08. My employer is filing the extension. My impression is it will take 3-4 months for the approval of the petition. I need to go back to my country for my brother's wedding in Nov-08. Is it possible to leave US and come back with my petition pending?
