Scheduling H1 interview with passport copy

I am a Pakistani National currently working in Dubai. My H1 has been approved and I want to schedule visa interview date with US consulate Islamabad. The interview appointment is obtained by submitting documents (H1 approval, Application forms etc) with original passport, to American Express who then gets the date from consulate and returns back.
My question is that is it necessary to submit original passport to American Express at the time of getting the interview date.
Since I cannot travel to Islamabd at this time, Can I submit copy of the passport alongwith other related documents to get the interview appointment. Will they accept it?

Yes, I believe you have to submit the passport copy.
