H1B Status after Job Terminated

I am under a H1B visa currently working. I have a wife, under a H4 visa, and a new born child who is an American Citizen. With all this mess with the economy, I was thinking what would happen if my employer laid me off. How much time do I have to leave the country if I don't find another job?

As per the books, you are out of status the same day and you have to leave immediately.
