eligibility to stay in United states

i m currently on h1-B visa ...and wife in COS from h4 to f1 .....i was laid off today ...
i just wanted to know how long can i or my wife stay in United States under these conditions.....my wife applied for COS in nov 08 ....
also submiited all the RFE documents last week at california center.

kindly help..
