  • Question abt SSN for HB visa holder *** Urgent

    Good day to all Member,

We have arrived the States under H1B visa on Sep 25 and applied for SSN after 4 days. However, we have just got the letter from the SSA on Nov 5 to state that they are unable to issue us with the SSN at this time because the department of Homeland Security is unale to verify the immigration document that we submitted as evidence of our lawful alien status and asked us to contact this agency to clarify our current immigration status. Additionally, they also stated to contact the SSA when we can give them the documents they need.

We are very surprised that we have been checked and stamped by the DHS officer under the H1B status when we touched down the airport but they still mentioned that they can not verify our current status and refuse to issue us with the SSN.

We'd like to ask if there is anyone of IMMIHELP forum facing the same problem like self and pls kindly enlighten us with some suggestion/idea, if possible. In this case, we should contact which agency eg. DHS or SSA first ?

Lastly, can someone help to give us the address/contact details of DHS local office in Orange County, CA incase we must visit their office to clarify the needs.

    Thank you all !

This is very common. It will take time for your immigration information to get into the system that can be accessed by the social security office. Usually people go to the SSN office only after 3 weeks from arriving in U.S, by which the information would have got uploaded. Go after 20 days and you should be able to apply without any issues.

Thank you Shervin143 for your very swift feedback. For your advice of applying the SSN after 20 days, is it 20 days after our first arrival date or 20 days after the date of letter sent by SSA ? Pls enlighten.

      Thank you

            Hi All,

I have just revisited the SSA this morning and understood the SSA officer was still unable to look up my name and status from USCIS's website, however they still accepted to refile my SSN application for the second time after verifying my passport and I-94. In order to make everything clearer, i also visited USCIS local office and showed them the replying letter from SSA, the lady officer in USCIS just simply gave me one form G-845 Document Verification Request + detailed mailing address of USCIS local office in LA and asked me to give this blank form back to SSA officer so that the SSA officer can fulfill then mail back to them for the verification. I did return back to the SSA office to deliver such documents as per what the USCIS lady office advised, however the SSA's officer said that they knew this form and will internally communicate with USCIS to resolve my case and ask me to wait for their reply in the soonest time.

            My questions are:

1 - Am i correct to say that the SSA officer must prepare this form by themselves and send to USCIS local office to manually verify my status/name after two weeks time couting from my 1st application submission date if they are still unable to look up my name/status from USCIS's website ? In this case, i think there is somthing very wrong when they wait until 5 weeks time then just simply throw back the denial letter to me ?

2 - Do you know how long does it take for the manual verification under form G-845 ?

3 - Is there any one of us facing this same situation ? If any, pls share some experience.

The reason i am serious against the SSN as my employer is unable to settle my first month salary w/o the SSN and they are also uncomfortable when being reported that my case/name is under verified by the Government (???)

I appreciate if all of you guys can assist self by giving some tips/advice.

Thank you and have a nice weekend ahead.
