Is SSN required to get a PO

Can someone tell me if it is really required to have SSN inorder to get a PO? Actually , I have H1 petition of last year, but didn't go for stamping.

Right now, I am on H4 and my employer said that he can get apply for status change once I get a PO.

But, recently I heard from one of my frnds that no one would issue a PO w/o asking for SSN.

Is this really true? If so, how should I handle this?

Most of the end-client will ask for SSN to do a background verification / drug test. They also want to make sure that they are not hiring an illegal immigrant.
