H1 visa stamping to go or not

I am planning to make a visit to India early next month. My current H1 Stamping is expiring on 31st Dec 2009.

Do I need to attend for the visa stamping interview, if I come back to US on 22nd Dec? (I have an approved I-797 H1 extension till Dec-2012).
