Taking a long vacation during H1B

Hi all,

I am a H1B Visa holder working for a IT Consulting company. I have plans to go to India for 6 months and return to USA. Can anyone please let me know if this is allowed when a person is in H1B visa. Does it make his/her Visa go out of status. If one goes for a long unpaid vacation does his H1B status change like without his/her payroll being run.

There is no status when you go out of the Country (Meaning, you won't go out of status when you are outside U.S). While returning back, you will need a valid visa and your employer should have the job available.
