urgent help needed..passport expiry

hi...
I am new to this forum so pls forgive if am asking similar question which has been asked ever before...
I am on H1 visa & travelling to India for stamping. Already scheduled appointment on 8th feb 2010 but thing is my passport validity is till 9 july 2010 & visa validity is till 2011.
My query is
1) Am I supposed to apply for a new passport (re-issue) to CGI NY before travelling to India? If yes how many days it will take?
2) Since am staying in NY since last 5 yrs can I apply for re-issuance of passport in India? If yes, can I apply after visa stamping..

Folks pls help me out.. its really very urgent as my travelling dates are approaching very near..

>>> Very much advisable to renew your passport before you go for the visa interview. Depending on the VO, sometimes you may get a visa only till the passport expiry date. It takes 3 weeks for the passport renewal in U.S.

>>> Yes. But passport renewal in U.S is much faster and easier compare to India.
