H1B extension before expiry

Hi Experts,
Does someone know How many months before H1b expiry i need to apply for h1b extension. my h1b expires on 1st APril 2011. it there any minimum number of days before 1st April, i must apply for extension ?

Can i go for h1b transfer to a new company if i go for h1b extension thru my current employer.

Pls advise if anyone has faced this situation before.

>>> USCIS asks candidates to file it at least 45 days in advance. But nowadays the extension takes almost 4-5 months. So it is advisable to file it as early as possible or go for premium. Your application for renewal should reach USCIS by the expiry date of the current I-94.
