non-profit H1-B to cap H1-B, please help!

I am working in a university with non-profit h1-b. And I have an offer from a company. The company has filed cap H1-B application for me, the new H1-B will be effective as early as oct. 1 2011. My question is can I quit my old job before oct. 1. If the university revoke my non-profit h1-B, am I still legal to stay in US.

Once you receive the approval for the new petition with change of status, you can safely quit the current job. But you must wait until Oct 1 start working for the for-profit employer.
