H4 to H1 Status

Can anyone help me please??

I came to US on H4 VISA and then I applied for H1. My H1 is approved and is with my employer. I want to know what needs to be done for my status change to H1. How long can I have approved H1 without being on H1 status. As of now my employer has not given me any papers for the H1 approval. Does H1 approval mean that my status automatically changes??

Please help me!!!!
