H1B stamping 6th year expiring soon

My H1B is expiring in Jun 2012. My GC process has started and Labor is about to be applied soon. I work full-time for a consultancy firm and been working with a government state project ever since I joined the consultancy firm(approx 1 year)

I need to go to India for a few weeks.
My question is:

1) Is it safe to go to India in the next couple of months and get the visa stamping while the H1B expiration date is approaching.
2) What documentation do I need to carry to the US consulate for visa stamping.
