H1B transfer or change of status

Hello,

I will be laid off soon and I am currently on an H1B permit. Do I have any time to make a transfer if I find a job? I have heard anything from no time whatsoever to 60 days, so I am not quite sure.

If I don't, I am considering changing my status to B1. Is there any difference between doing it here in the US or going back to my home country and getting a B1 visa to come back for a short time?

The H1B transfer should be filed before your last day with the current employer. After that you will go out of status on H1B and a transfer is not possible.

Every visa has a purpose. B2 is for tourist and if that is not your intention, then B2 will be denied. Getting a B2 to search for job is illegal. Also a COS from B1/B2 to H1b later is never advisable.
