Travel out of US on previous employer's visa

Hi,
I have H1 visa valid till Nov 2012. This visa is from my previous employer. Now i have joined a new employer and my current I797 from new employer is till 2014.
I need to travel out of US for some project work. Can i enter US with previous employer's visa in passport? I am told that we can do that as long as visa is valid and i have valid petition from my current employer.

Please clarify.

Yes, you can use the current Visa and new approval notice to return to US. On returning your new I-94 will be based on the new approval notice. Return all I-94's when you leave the US.
