Visa stamping for H1B extension petition with unexpired current Visa

I would be traveling to India(performing the religious rites of
my deceased mother), and I would be in India from April 15, 2012
to May 4, 2012. Due to personal and family restrictions,
it would not be possible of reschedule or change my vacation plan.
My current H1B would be valid till 11May2012. My H1B extension is starts
effect from 7May2012 to 18 May2014. Would it be legal and safe if I schedule
my Visa Stamping Interveiw anytime between April 16 and April 20. How many
days before a H1B visa expires,
I can go forward with stamping?

You can attend the visa interview anytime as long as you have an extended petition. You can also return back on the existing valid H1B visa. By showing the extended approval notice at the POE, you will get an i_94 matching the extended petition.
