can i study in the usa on an R1 visa?

hi since the last six months i am in the usa on a R1 visa and i wanted to do a masters course in penn state so can i study on my visa?

secondly my visa in the passport expires in a years time but i have an extension of two additional years on my I-94 so would i have to get a new visa when i leave usa after the original one year expires?
