Emergency F1 visa situation - Please help

I got the F1 - student visa on August 10th for the Fall Semister of 2006. Unexpectedly I am not able to go to USA to attend the classes because of some emergency situation. Is it possible for me to go to the Spring semister 2007 with the visa granted for Fall semister of 2006? I talked to international coordinators regarding the situation, they mentioned that they will issue a new I-20 for spring semister 2007 and they said that I need not go through the entire visa procedure. Is this true?

Please advice me regarding the situation. I would really appreciate any help.

I think you can come later on the same visa,just keep the proof of your family emergency in case the port of entry people ask you the reason of delay.
