Validity for UK intransit Visa from US and which form to apply

This is the first time I am travelling to India Via London without a valid visa stamp on my passport however I have visa extension papers.
I am told that I would need intransit Visa. Which form should I apply? My wife and I are traveling together. Should we need 2 applications or can I fill as a family?
Also What is the validity for this intransit visa. Please reply.

Yes, goto ukba.com and apply for a DATV (Direct Airside Transit Visa). I just did as I'm in the same situation. They have an option to premium process applications - chk that out if you need the visa in a hurry.
