  • Fixed vs. comprehensive and coverage amount for short stay

Thank you for this website and your prompt responses. I had bought insurance for my visiting in-laws (Fixed Coverage- VIsitor Care I believe) in 2004 through this site and luckily there was no incident and no need for any claim.

Now I am getting ready for my parents to visit and again have the choice of India vs. US and fixed coverage vs. comprehensive etc. Questions for you:

    1. For just a 2 month stay is it really worth going for comprehensive? They are 67 and 63 years old but one has BP and one has diabetes, but otherwise fine.
    2. I will likely go for Visitor Care again. Is $25000 coverage enough? Since pre-existing won't be covered anyway- the worst that can happen is an accident and say 10 days hospital stay or $10000- or am I being too frivolous/optimistic and cheap?
    3. Please provide link or details for comparison of India based vs. US based plans. Is it possible that my fathers India medical insurance (from the company he retired from) may cover pre-existing conditions here?

Thank you for your interest in purchasing health insurance for your parents.

    0. India vs. US
It is certainly better to buy insurance from US.

    1. Visitors insurance are typically for short term. It does not matter how short duration the persons are visiting. It is always better to purchase comprehensive coverage plans.

    2. Visitors Care $25,000 is NOT enough by any means.
Whether the person has pre-existing conditions or not does not matter as probability of some getting into new medical conditions is same for every one for a given age. When some new medical condition occurs, how much you are covered is what different in fixed vs. comprehensive coverage. Someone stays in hospital for 10 days for an accident, the bill may be well over $100,000. And visitors care $25k will be pay $825/day x 10 days = $8,250. You pay rest. I saw an ER visit bill for $5,918 just last week and Visitors Care $25k will pay $200 (minus deductible) for the same. You pay rest.

I don't believe your father's insurance from India will cover pre-existing conditions in US. It may not cover at all outside India.
