What if my sponsored visitor does not get medical insurance at all?

My elderly father is visiting from Asia and I am wondering if we don't get any medical insurance for him at all during his visit and he does need emergency medical care, would I, his sponsor, be responsible for paying all of the hospital bills?

Actually, as a sponsor I just have to promise not to let my visitor become public charge. When I looked up the definitions for public charge, it says medical costs (other than long term nursing home care) do NOT qualify someone as public charge. So it looks like I don't need to get him health insurance as long as we're not planning for him to have any non-emergency medical treatments.
