If you receive a 221(g) letter at the time of your immigrant visa interview, that means that additional documents or information is needed for the processing of your immigrant visa, and until that can be provided, your case will be put on hold.
In this case, please follow the procedure as described below:
- Collect the additional documents and/or information as specified in your 221(g) letter.
- Within one year of the date specified on the 221(g) letter, visit the nearest Visa Application Center of the Consular Zone, where you interviewed. In other words, if you were interviewed at the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi, you can visit any of the application centers in Northern India. Similarly, for those who were interviewed at the U.S. Consulate in Mumbai, you can visit any of the application centers in Western, Eastern, or Southern India.
- When visiting the visa center, carry the following with you:
- Original 221(g) letter.
- Additional documents and/or information as specified in your 221(g) letter.
- Original passports of all the family members who have applied together.
In case the Consulate has retained your original passport, you must submit the photocopy.
- Original 221(g) letter.
- Pay the logistics fee per applicant in cash at the application center. They will issue you a receipt for the payment.
- They will forward your documents to the appropriate U.S. Embassy/Consulate.
- If everything is in order, your passport will be stamped with an immigrant visa, along with all other appropriate documents that will be couriered to you within 3 working days. Otherwise, another 221(g) letter will be couriered to you. Alternatively, you can also collect your passport and the documents across the counter at the application center in the city where your immigrant visa interview was scheduled.
