1 VISA APPROVED IN SECOND ATTEMPT
I am excited to share my US visa experience here. Following story is intended to share my experience friendly and does not intend to insult any person or authority thereunder.

I am a law student from Mumbai and was intended to pursue LL.M. from the U.S. I read most of the Visa experiences before applying and most of the students says, just be confident, give your answers with a smile and all. Always remember the Visa officers are not concerned about your smile or confidence but they want the true information and cross verification of your profile by reading your face expression. The funny thing is that the student who says just be confident, has a father working as a Bank Branch Manager or C.A. or has own business. If you have enough fund by your family, Visa interview is just a normal process for US school admissions but if you are being financed by a bank loan, huge family fund in account like 25lakhs at a time, uncle as a sponsor and US School’s scholarship, then congrats! your profile is an interesting case for the Visa officer! :D

First of all, DO NOT read visa experiences online, those who clear the interview do not have time to share but those who fail, seeks reason by sharing online and can make you uncomfortable before you give your interview.

My Visa interview at Mumbai US Consulates:
I went there early in the morning, white shirt, fresh mood, smile on the face ? what else we need?
I saw young visa officers on the starting counter numbers and was hearing every interview as approved! Wow.. but wait, at the last counter, there was one 60+ year old officer talking for a long time like 15 minutes on each interview.. (Oh god don’t send me there) finally my time came, yes at the same 60+ years visa officer! I ask the security if I can go to the nearby counter which has been vacate just infornt of me, He said No! stick with yours!
There was one guy before me, was talking very confidently, I think he had good finance. :p officer approved his Visa. ThereWeGo!
My turn came. He waive me a hand to stop.. He was eating biscuits. Went inside.. came back… how I can look at him when he is eating biscuits and how can I ignore him to miss if he shows his hand and call me.. I was in place of dead and live.. He drunk water.. waited more 2 minutes and called me…
Me: Good Morning!
VO: put his hand out of the window and the mike was not working when he was speaking,
Me: I passed, Passport, I-20 and Sevis Fees Receipt.
VO: Where you going?
Me: Brooklyn, New York.
VO: for what?
Me: for LL.M.
VO: Why did you chose this school?
Me: School has awarded me $11000 scholarship, I have 300+ email conversations with the director, school is in New York which is a great opportunity to learn international law with nearby various court houses and public offices in Brooklyn City!
VO: Went inside for 5 Minutes and came back.
VO: Who is sponsoring you?
Me: I have 25 lakhs bank balance and rest of the finance is sponsored by my uncle (NAME)
VO: Have you ever travel out of your country?
Me: No.
VO: You do not qualify for the visa this time and the reason is listed on this paper (Section 214B – Immigrant Intend). You may reapply soon in the future. You understand?
Me: Yes sir!

I was not ready to leave the place, I was shocked! The whole game failed. Everything was finished! Even if I try to apply for the next time, appointments were delayed by a month but my program was starting within 15 days! I asked many experienced foreign ministry officers, they said there are 99.99% chances of visa rejection in second attempt with the same school, profile and semester. I had already invested 1.5lakhs in admission process and was not ready to waste it for not giving a last try. Still there is 00.01% chance of success. I tried to reschedule an appointment but was not possible in Mumbai so decided to fix it in Hyderabad Consulates. I got an appointment just 4 days before my program starts..

Experience in Hyderabad.

Seriously speaking, I was not scared at all while waiting outside for an interview. I was there just because my mom was forcing me to give a last try and I wanted my mom to stop asking me the same thing again n again.
My second turn came.. I told my brother that I will sing a song inside and will come out so don’t make any hope for me Okay?
I saw, the rejection rate was higher in Hyderabad as compare to Mumbai.. Lol 00.01% chance is also gone!
There were 3 students before me, the VO was a young guy of 25-27 age angry young man!
The present interviewee got his visa approved!
The second guy was stunned! Lol..
The VO said to him: You are coming for the second time to me for an interview please go to another counter, but he still did not leave the place, VO again showed his hand asked to move him in a direction then the guy left for other counter.
Third girl..
VO: When did you pass out?
Girl: Blah Blah
VO: Percentage?
VO: How you are financing?
Girl: Education Loan
VO: What is the security for loan?
Girl: My house.
VO: uuffff! Ok your visa is approved!
Girl: Thank you!

My turn,
Me: Good Morning officer!
VO: No reply, Serious face. When did you pass out?
Me: Blah Blah
VO: Percentage?
Me: 53%
VO: Terrible!
Me: hehehe (Shameless smile)
VO: Who is sponsoring you?
Me: My uncle (NAME)
VO: Where he works?
Me: (told company name)
VO: (Surprised! And angry.) You are telling me the wrong name.
Me: No sir its right.. please check the second page.
VO: How much he earns?
Me: YYYY
VO: (Angry) I can do the maths, you are telling me the wrong amount.
Me: Sir he was in Astralia last year hence his income is low on the document but if you see previous year statement it’s enough there.
VO: Keep Quite.
Me: ….. (give me my documents, I wana go home asap)
VO: Show me your bank details. Not balance certificates but Transaction History.
VO: What your fathers do?
Me: He is physically handicap.
VO: Not working anywhere?
Me: No.
VO: Went inside for about 5 minutes.
Me: (Just give me my documents back, I wana go)
VO: Came and started typing,
Me: I was pretty sure he is going to reject my visa because I never read such experience on the internet before.
The VO through my documents out of the window and I was searching my Passport in the documents like a crazy. I collect the documents and was looking as to when he is throwing my passport at my face and the VO said…
YOUR VISA IS APPROVED.
Me: Thank you so much sir! (Wait, what did he just said?) Oh my god. The guy behind me saw the whole story and was smiling at me. I started running from the place and the securities were running behind me….
Today, I am doing my LL.M. in the US immigration Law and in the first lecture introduction session, I said, I am doing my LL.M. in Immigration law just because my visa was rejected in first attempt Everybody laugh and agreed to my pain..

F1 Student - Fail to Registration for 1st Semester
I was on F2 Status in USA. I have applied universities for MS in Computer Science Program and received I -20 from university for fall 2016 semester. After then i have applied for change of status from F2 to F1 status. I got the approval for F1 Status from USCIS on September 21, 2016.

i meet with my college international advisor for registration for fall 2016 but she told me its too late for registration cz class has started from September 07, 2016. She told me to contact with Department and registration office and meet with dean and registration office but unfortunately both guys does not allow me for registration.

so i didn't registration for fall 2016. My F1 status is effective from September 21, 2016 . Now i can't attend to college for fail to registration. What would be my F1 status.

my status will be invalid since i can't attend class. Right?

Kindly help me out about this issues. What i have to do right now ?
How many options i have to do valid my status ?

J1 student visa with private sponsor (Approved)
Interview date - May 2015
Location - Chennai
Purpose - Doctoral program in US
Dependent - J2 for wife and son

Here is sharing my experience of J1 student visa to USA. Mine was 1 of the rarest of rare cases where I had a private organization that is not my current employer sponsoring me for study. I have not been able to locate any documentation of such case anywhere on the internet and hence sharing my experience with you all.

My doctoral program was not funded by university hence I was required to create a source of funds. Through my network I found a private organization which was willing to fund me (for more than 50% of tuition plus living expenses for the whole family) in return for minimum 3 yr employment contract with them in India after finishing doctoral program. I had saved to fund the remaining part myself. The sponsoring organization, its legal advisor and me realized that J student visa will suit our needs the best since it necessitates (in most cases) return of the student back to his country after the course is over. Another advantage of J1 visa is that spouse of the J1 visa holder can apply for employment authorization in US. I have read that in most cases the employment authorization is granted (in my case too it was granted within the timeline specified). I was happy since this would ensure that my wife does not remain unemployed in US even as I study.

Since my objective was to return to home country anyway, J1 student visa suited me. I understand that the clause of returning to home country after finishing education can be waived off if such a request is made.

I was apprehensive if university will accept private organization which is not my current employer as sponsor to issue DS 2019. Though I had read on various websites about this being an acceptable practice, my university had not clearly stated or agreed to this. However on submission of all documents viz. letter from sponsor, sponsor bank statement, my bank statement and other university forms, we were (me & my family) were issued DS 2019 by the university.

The DS 2019 I received had mistakes. I wrote to the university and they sent me the corrected form. The fresh form and the original were a bit different in their content and hence I decided to retain both.

The visa application process after receipt of DS 2019 is well documented on various websites hence I would not elaborate on it.

For my visa interview, I ensured that I had impeccable documentation which included the following
Primary documents set that I created
- DS 160 with bar code
- SEVIS fees receipt
- Form DS 2019
- Passport
- Visa appointment confirmation letter with bar code

Supporting document set
- Documents to support sponsor’s commitment and financial ability
o Sponsors letter (original). Ensure that when sponsor issues a sponsorship letter to university, you are in the CC and hence you also receive an original copy of it.
o Sponsor’s bank statement for last 6 months
o Employment contract document

- Documents to support my financial soundness
o CA’s certificate about my asset valuation.
? Liquid assets - Money in bank
? Other liquid assets - Securities, MF, PF
? Immovable assets – Properties etc
? Other movable assets – Gold, silver, vehicles, furniture etc
Note - I had to pay good money to CA for this, however I was not asked for it by the consular. I am not sure if this is needed. My visa consultant had repeatedly mentioned to me that this is not required since it’s not considered very reliable by the consulate.

o My bank statement showing balance to support the 1st year’s fund needed
o Last 3 month salary slips
o IT return acknowledgement of last 3 yrs
o Form 16 of last 3 yrs
o My PF statement
o My LIC statement
o My shares/MF statements
o Print of the mail by program director mentioning that they were considering me for research assistant’s position.

- Documents related to academics
o Photocopy of DS 2019
o GRE and TOEFL scorecards
o Original transcripts along with original degree certificates
o Original marks cards of all courses attended
o University admission confirmation letter

- Other documents
o Marriage certificate
o DS 2019 of wife and son (they did not apply with me, they applied shortly after)
o Son’s birth certificate
Note - Out of all the above documents, the consular asked me only for my primary documents. He did not ask for any other supporting documents.

Preparation for visa interview –
I had looked up the internet and prepared answers (by writing down answers exactly the way I would be saying them) for questions asked for J1 visa (most of these were relevant but others were suitable for other kinds of J visa and not J1 student visa) and questions expected for F1 student visa.

Appearing for the interview -
- You might know that visa process in India is conducted across 2 days. I went 20 minutes before scheduled time on 1st day for finger printing. We were however let in with a delay of good 20-25 minutes. Hence the wait in queue outside the VAC, on the road was really long, tiring and embarrassing. I also felt insulted for being made to stand on the road for such a long time. Hope the consulate takes note of this and ensures that appropriate waiting arrangements are done. The process after getting in the VAC was quite quick.
- On the next day my visa interview was scheduled for 9.30am. I reached just 10 minutes before schedule. I was asked to go in immediately while there were many others waiting as they had arrived too early for appointment. My guess is that in mornings the ‘on road’ wait time is relatively less. Hence for morning appointments you might want to go just a few minutes before time.
- Finger printing was done again inside the consulate before the interview. I guess it was just a check to ensure that the same candidate has walked in for interview.
- Within 15 minutes after finger printing I was before the consular. He was a cheerful gentleman. I greeted him with a smile. He asked me for my passport and DS 2019 only. He then asked couple of very basic questions like
o Which course are you planning to do?
o Who is funding your education?
I answered both questions confidently. He then signed on my DS 2019, made a mention that 2 year home residency was required due to country skill list and congratulated me on my visa approval. He handed my DS 2019 to me, retained my passport on which the visa was stamped in a few days and sent back to me. We have been in US for last 1 year now. My wife got a job soon on arriving here. I am engaged in the full time doctoral course and son is in pre school. Will be happy to answer any questions or help others.

J1 (Exchange Visitor) - Approved
Interview date: Sep 7, 2016
Time: 10:30 AM
Location: Mumbai
Purpose: Short-term training program by company (ZZZ) at their US office
Dependent: J-2 Visa for wife

The queue outside the embassy is typically very long and you won't be allowed to join the queue till ~30 mins before the interview appointment time, so make sure you arrive appropriately esp. if it is a very sunny / rainy day. Alternatively, carry umbrella. Also, not to repeat but don't bring any backpacks, electronics incl. mobiles, charger, earphone etc.

Once inside, they scan the fingerprint and check the passport before making you join one of the interview counter queues.

VO: Good Morning
Me: Good Morning

VO: Hand me your passport and DS-2019

VO: What do you do currently?
Me: I am a consultant with XYZ in their Mumbai office

VO: And are they sending you to US?
Me: Yes. I have been offered a short-term management consulting traineeship by my company in their Atlanta office

VO: What sort of a training is this?
Me: It is a structured training program to work in an advanced consulting market, learn those skills and bring them back to India. I will be working on projects as an apprentice in the ongoing projects

VO: What sort of projects are these?
Me: These are management consulting projects.

VO: What exactly is your project?
Me: The project has not been assigned yet, however, I will join one of the projects that will be floated at the time I reach there

(Long interruption as another VO came over for some doubt, took ~3-4 minutes)

VO: Sorry for the interruption (Smiles). How long have you worked for XYZ?
Me: A little over 2 years

VO checks my passport and sees that I have an active 10-year Canada business visa
VO: Have you travelled to Canada?
Me: I had to go for a business visit, however, it got cancelled at the last moment. However, I have an active US B-1 visa as well in my old passport and have travelled to US twice.

VO: And how long have you guys been married? (I applied for J-2 for my wife)
Me: 21 months to this date

VO took a stamp, endorsed the waiver for residency requirement on our DS-2019 and then signed both our DS-2019

VO: Guys, you are all set. Have a great trip

Me: Thanks a lot. Have a great day

What worked for me (probably) was that I work for a very reputed management consulting firm (Top 3 in the world), had enough stipend / housing / insurance coverage by my firm and have a degree from IIM & IIT. So it was pretty smooth.
