U.S. Consulates in India to Resume Processing Student Visas

Beginning Monday, August 17, 2020, the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi, India, and the U.S. Consulates in Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata, all in India, will resume processing student and academic exchange visitor visa applications on a limited basis.

According to a statement released on August 14, priority will be given to emergency appointments for students and exchange visitors that were received before August 12. They will then begin offering public appointments. Students and exchange visitors looking to schedule a non-emergency appointment should do so no further than three weeks before the scheduled start of classes.

The statement notes that the consulates expect available appointment slots to fill quickly. It also notes that, given the number of backlogged requests and the coronavirus-related safety restrictions in place, it will likely not be possible to fulfill all requests before the beginning of the fall 2020 semester.

“We will try to handle requests based on when we receive them and when classes will start,” the statement reads. “We ask for your patience during this time.”
