H1B Renewal on 19 Oct 2011 in Tijuana
These were the steps I followed:
Drove to the Mexico/Tijuana border in San Ysidro, CA and parked at the Parking lot (borderstationparking.com @ $7 per day). Crossed the road and followed the footpath into Tijuana with my luggage through the large revolving metal teeth doors into Mexico. Took a cab ($5)to my Hotel Palacio Azteca ($47 deal) near the ASC in Aqua Caliente.

The hotel is a fantastic deal for the price with clean rooms, modern fitness center, pool etc and most people speaking English.
Next morning walked to and along Aqua Caliente (12 mins) to the ASC. This is a rather non descript corner of the building just before you see a PEMEX station that devides the road (Agua Caliente) into 2. It is next to the Mexico Visa office (which is slightly more advertised). Arrive 30 mins early to get in and out quickly (Cell phones and electronics are not allowed though they will ask you to turn them off and remove batteries if you have them on person). This place only verifies document. You ahould have your passport/DS160 confirm/ Appointment details. They will also take your fingerprins here. Try not to have any belts or metallic object like pins etc.Took 30 mins for the whole processing. They will give you and appointment to the consulate with sticker (need this for next step)

Next day took a taxi to the new consulate ($9) for the actual interview. Remember to not have any electronics including cell phone for this portion!! There are 4 steps involved. Outside document verification: Will check same documents plus sticker from ASC (provide Queue number). Then you will go in through security(Like the airports). Finally into a new building that has all the interviews. Queue numbers will be called and displayed on screens above. First is just another data/document verification. Second step is a thumbprint verification. Lastly is the actual verbal interview. For renewal hardly any questions were asked. Just are you in the same company as original. Are you working for that company and not a contractor. If these 2 are yes then its your visa is approved. Come back tomorrow after 2:30 pm. My interviewer was chatty and made some jokes as well as good suggestions about Green card application. (Get a white slip showing approval). Returned to Hotel $10 in Cab.

Next day arrived. They are not bothered about electronics or bags so get your bags if you decide to leave immidiately. Wait outside and your name will be called (may take a while). Get and verify your visa an leave for border ($12).

Took long line like everyone else and followed the mass. That is the correct line do not deviate and take any other line as you already have I94 and WHTI.

Get your Visa scanned and luggage checked and wolk out and onto the overbridge (across I5) to reach back to the parking station

H1B visa approval at mumbai counsulate
hi ,
its my turn now to add my experience. I was reading posts from this forum and it helped me a lot. I carried a lot f documents the Vo only asked for the pink token number.

VO: why are you going to us
ME: YYYY XX
VO: your annual salary
ME:#####$
VO: have you read the white slip:
ME: yes
VO: you visa is approved.

My friend goofed up a day earlier. He was assigned to a different project and he said that his manager was not at the location where he would be stationed..... that is not allowed for H1B individuals.... so even if you project has changed manage to answer the VO with the old project only... dont in any way confuse him/her... one more thing ... female VOs ask a lot of questions and your chances of getting a slip increases if you get a female VO so thats a luck factor.... and if your employer is a BEP category is becomes even easier...

Regards'
Scorp

Ans: I replied yes

then she finally said, "Your visa is finally approved after few rejections, have a safe trip"

Note that candidate appearing for interview with glasses in chennai should carry photos without glasses else they will have take a new photos in the consulate itself by paying Rs. 100. I have always used photo with glasses in past but looks like they are not entertaining any more citing the reason that glasses are obstructing the view of eyes. It took around 20-25 mins extra to complete the photo so be advised that you take care of it.

Thanks immihelp.

Thanks,
Pavan

H1-B Approved. Mumbai Location
Hi Immihelp,

First of all, I would like to take this opportunity to thank immihelp for helping me out on every question , queries for H1-B. For last 7 months, my H1-B was in process. Finally I had interview in Mumbai on 17-Oct.

We went to VFS first, overall VFS is providing good facility to wait for some time and transportation to consulate (where interviews are conducted). I would suggest going for this facility if you are going to Mumbai. Our interview was scheduled at 10:30 but we went to VFS little early by 8:00 AM. then we were transported to consulate and directly went in after security checks. Token collection and finger prints happened in 20 minutes. Then we waited for our turn. in 15 minutes our token number was called then we went in. I was carrying big bunch of documents.

VO: Good Morning, How are you doing?
we: Good Morning, We are good, How are you?

Long Pause..

VO: Have you been to usa?
Me: answered

VO: What you will be working there
Me: answered. I explained about a minute.

VO: Is it In-house project or client Project?
Me: In-House

VO: which company you are working now?
Me: Answered

VO: why you are want to work for new company?
Me: answered

VO: What is your current salary?
Me: Answered

VO: what will be your salary in USA
Me: Answered

To My wife
VO: How long you been married
Wife: answered

VO: it was arranged Marriage or Love
Wife: answered

Long Pause..

VO: your visa is approved you will get passport in 3-5 working days.

I have 8 years of experience and been to USA 3 times. I think that turn the thing very well even I will be working for small company.

H1b at Chennai
Here is the interview process at the consulate I experienced.

My Interview was scheduled at 10.15 AM, 29th September, Chennai Consulate. I was in a consulate office at 9.40 AM. At the gate, I submitted DS 160 confirmation page to the staff, she verified and gave a token along with it. Immediately, I was subjected to security check and I was let inside.

I was instructed to wait for my token number to flash on a screen to join the particular queue. Wait time was short and joined a queue for one of the windows. I submitted DS 160, Passport and H1B supporting documents. A staff over there arranged it in a order and wrote a PIMS number on confirmation page. This was same as petition number. He handed over blue folder and instructed me to go to other queue. Other queue was empty and they took my ten finger print and asked to go to different building for a visa interview.

I moved to other building and the hall was occupied. All applicants were asked to wait for their number to flash on screen and join the respective queue. I almost waited here for 20 mins. My token number flashed on screen and I went to the window. There were already 2 people ahead of me and I waiting for my turn.

Finally, my turn came. Here is the conversation.

Me: Good Morning Officer! How you doing today ?
VO: Good.. How about you?
Me: Fine, Thank you.. I handed over blue folder which contains, PP, DS 160, I797, H1B Supporting documents
VO: (was going through my PP and entered some info on her computer)
VO: Where will you be staying in US?
Me: New Jersey
VO: What is company name?
Me: ZZZ
VO: From how long you are working for them?.... she immediately realized and said are you a new employee for them ?
Me: I have not yet worked with them. I am new employee for ZZZ
VO: What is the salary you would be getting?
Me: YYYY per annum
VO: How much are you paid in current company?
Me: YYYY lakhs per annum
VO: Is it a client project?
Me: Yes
VO: Who is the client?
Me: YYYY
VO: What is the project about ?(mean while she was verifying I797 and other documents)
Me: I explained a project...
VO: VO stopped me and asked me for LCA
Me: (Gave her LCA..)
VO: Visa is approved and would be getting in 4~5 days...
Me: Is it possible for me to collect my passport personally at VFS counter?
VO: Yes you can... she handed over the pamphlet and asked me to call-up the number to track passport
Me: Thank you, Have a nice day
I did not receive my Passport even after a week and was in panic and called-up VFS but no use. Sent an email to [email protected] and got a reply after a day saying it is pending for PIMS verification. Finally, received my passport with stamped visa on 12th October.
