My parents got their visitor visa
Hello,
Thanks a lot To Immihelp. My parents had their Visa Interview on Aug 10th at 8 :15 am
As soon as they entered thier docs like DS156,DS157,HDFC receipt, interview letter were checked. Then another person asked for the I-134 and our photocopies of the passport. After that they wer made to wait in a line which directed them to Interview in Tamil.

My Parents greeted them.The interviewer asked the following question to my father;

How many children do u have?
Where r u working?
What is the designation and the pay that u get?
Do you have leave sanctioned?
Why do u wanna visit USA?(he was asked this question in the beginning of the int and also at the end of the interview)
The Interview did not ask for any documents for verification.Though after answering each question ,when my father tried to show the document, they told that it is not needed.

They the interviewer told my parents that they r issuaing visa for them.

WE ARE STILL YET TO KNOW THE NO OF YEARS OR MONTHS OF VALIDITY.

i hope this helps others to prepare for the interview...

Please note:Those who wish to book appointment for their parens/inlaws,keep looking for the aavailable date in the morning..ie between 6 am -8 am....For sure u will get the available dates.

I tried for the available date after 10 am everyday and never got the dates...but then i started looking between 7am - 8 am CST ,and got many dates available...but very sure that within 15 minutes those date will be booked..so be prepared by filling the DS 156,DS157 a little earlier.make sure all the data u entered r rite.I tried on july 20th and got the appointment date for Aug 10th(tamil interview)

Telugu appt at Chennai and abt saving your appln for 7 days, mistakes in DS 156
We were planning to get our in-laws to the United States just in time for the delivery of our first child in November. The first thing we were looking for is a Telugu appointment but as most of the people experienced with the process know that they are not readily available and it is very difficult to find one and ultimately lock on one as so many people will be looking for them. It is ridiculous how the consulate doesnt allot as many Telugu appointments in line with the demand. It is unfortunate that even after paying the high amount of fee for the application and interview appearance, you will have to keep looking for the appointments all the time and at the end, you may be rejected for some ridiculous reason. Anyway, we learnt from our friends that you need to try day and night for at least a week to find a Telugu appt. The plan is to fill the DS 156 and 157 (where applicable) ahead of time and since they are going to be saved for 7 days (according to the VFS web site), keep looking for appointments and once they are available, retrieve the application and confirm the date.

VFS web site is very bad when it comes to communicating the users what the problem with what they are doing is. Make no mistake in believing that it is a secure web site, free of hacking and provides accurate information and all that, but their error messages are always cryptic and often in Greek and Latin. For example, if you do not have an application in saved state with them, the message you get is "Please select Exit and contact VFS for help.". Can't it just say that "There is no application exists with the information you provided. Please try again.". This happened to us as we saved an application once, it said "Your application will be saved for 7 days." My wife made a change to the application about 4 days after that and got the message that the application will be saved for 7 days. What would a normal human being that understands plain English thinks about that? I would say, they think that it will be saved for 7 days from when you modified the application. Right? WRONG. Your application's life is not extended at all, and it expires on the 7th day after it was originally created. So beware and if you want your application to be alive when you need it, delete it every few days and enter it again.

We tried for Telugu appointments for almost a week and seems that contrary to what people think, there is no certain time of the day (or night) that they "open" the appointments. First time, we found 3 days open when we looked at 8:30 AM EST, yesterday night, we found one at 3:19 AM!!. I think if you have someone in India that can check appts and call you during the night when they are available - you can do the work during the days here.

There is another interesting thing about the way VFS and Consulate "secure" our DS 156 for us. Once you fill the form and confirm an appointment, you CANNOT change fields 1 through 14 on the DS 156. They are disabled when you go back to the site, and VFS told us that you can modify those in front of the Consular Officer, but I would not take a chance doing it there knowing how cranky they can become!. It is always safe to cancel the appointment and take another one (though painful). So take extra caution when filling DS 156 before confirming an appointment.

Visitor visa granted
This Immihelp site has been of great help in preparing my parents for the visitors visa interview.

I am really very happy today as my parents have got 10yrs multiple entry visa in the very first attempt, thanks to this site and all the people who have posted their experience which has been of great help.

The following questions were asked :

1) How many children do you have?
2) What is your daughter doing in USA?
3) Why do you want to go to USA?
4) What are you doing?
5) Who will take care of your business in your absence?
6) What property do you have in India?
7) How long would you stay in USA?

They answered all the questions very confidently.
Thanks to this site I was able to prepare them well for the interview.

Thats it!!
Then the officer told that their visa has been granted.

As for the documentation ,they had looked into my affidavit of support and copy of my passport.

Our prayers have been answered .

Thank you Immihelp!!

Parents Visa denied twice
My dad has retired, mom a housewife. They got their visa rejected twice from MUmbai Consulate on the grounds that they did not have enough money to support themselves in India. The officers never bothered to check the papers, both times. Simply based on my father's income they assumed he was not stable financially, but in fact we own a big house and land back in India. all this info was in the documents that they were carrying.
I guess the consulate people simply go by what they hear without bothering to ascertain what the truth is really.
I wonder why do they even ask for the the paperwork to be prepared then wasting so much time for everybody when they dont even want to look at it even for a minute!!!
Very disappointed with the whole thing.

Parents visitor visa granted on second time
My parents got their visitors visa (10 year multiple entry) in their second application. Here is my suggestion to prospective applicants:
1. Prepare a concrete travel plan alongwith estimated expense.
2. Show that you have more than enough money to meet the expenses.
3. One sentence short answers during the interview helps.
4. Have an interpreter even if you know english. You get more time to think of the answer.
5. NEVER apply with other distant relatives, neighbors, etc.. they dont understand any such relationships (Main reason for disapproval in the first attempt)

Good luck!

Visitor visa (10 yrs) granted from Mumbai - Marathi interpretor
My parents got 10 years multiple entry Visa in one go. This happened because of the detailed description and guidance provided on this website and also the experiences shared by people.

There appt. was at Mumbai at 10:30 AM. They reached there by 8:30. Unfortunately they had to wait for 5 and 1/2 hrs before the interview actually started. So at 2 PM there interview started.
They opted for a MARATHI interpretor.
It seems whosoever opted for English got the appt. faster.
The officer started asking the following questions:

Q1: Why do you want to go to USA?
A: To see my grandson.
Q2: Who is going to sponsor your tickets & stay?
A: My son
Q3: On which visa your son is there in USA?
A: Working Visa (H1) (Note: At this point, my mom wanted to help my father answer the question, but the officer asked her not to speak in between)
Q4: Where were you working earlier?
A: Gave details. (My father is retired from his job now for last 5 years.)
Q5:When did you retire?
A: Gave details
Q6:Do you want to stay permanently in USA?
A: No, we plan to visit our family members and visit some tourist attractions and come back in 4 months, may be little earlier.

At this point, the officer told them that there visa has been granted.

Thanks everyone on immihelp for the help, sharing and guidance.
Neeraj
