New York has three major airports. Each one connects to Manhattan differently. I've worked in NYC ground transportation since 2010 and handle over 500 airport transfers a month. Here is every option with real prices, travel times, and honest pros and cons.
## JFK to Manhattan
JFK (
https://www.jfkairport.com/ ) is in Queens, about 15 miles from Midtown. Most international flights land here.
After landing, international arrivals go through passport control and customs. This takes 20-40 minutes on a normal day. During peak hours (4-7 PM) it can stretch past 60 minutes.
**AirTrain + Subway. $11. Takes 60-75 minutes.** The AirTrain (
https://www.jfkairport.com/to-from-airport/air-train ) connects all JFK terminals to Jamaica Station. From there, take the E train to Midtown. You can plan your subway route on the MTA site:
https://new.mta.info/maps . Works with one bag. Two suitcases on the subway means stairs, narrow turnstiles, and crowded trains. Not great after a 10-hour flight.
**Yellow Taxi. $95-105. Takes 40-60 minutes.** Flat rate $70 to anywhere in Manhattan plus $6-8 tolls and 15-20% tip. Follow signs to the taxi stand outside your terminal. Wait 10-20 minutes. Fits 3 passengers and 2 bags. More people or luggage means two cabs. More info:
https://www.nyc.gov/site/tlc/passengers/passenger-info.page
**Uber / Lyft. $55-150. Takes 40-60 minutes.** Base fare $55-75 on a normal day. Surge pricing during holidays, weather, and Friday evenings pushes it to $100-150. Pickup is at a designated rideshare lot, not your terminal door. Expect a 5-10 minute walk with luggage plus 3-20 minutes waiting for your driver. Download the apps:
https://www.uber.com/ and
https://www.lyft.com/
**Private Car Service. $150-260. Takes 40-60 minutes.** You book in advance. A driver tracks your flight and meets you at arrivals with a name sign. Fixed price includes tolls. For JFK transfers I use Gotham Ride:
https://gothamride.com/airport-car-service-nyc/jfk-airport-car-service/ . From $191 all-in for a sedan, includes 60 minutes of free wait time and flight tracking.
**Shared Shuttle. $25-35. Takes 75-100 minutes.** Cheapest door-to-door option. A van fills up with passengers going the same direction, then makes 3-5 stops before yours. Total time easily hits 90 minutes. One option:

## LaGuardia to Manhattan
LaGuardia (
https://www.laguardiaairport.com/ ) is closest to Manhattan. Only 8 miles from Midtown. Mostly domestic flights plus some routes from Canada, Caribbean, and a few European cities.
**Q70 Bus + Subway. $2.90. Takes 45-60 minutes.** The free Q70 bus runs from your terminal to Jackson Heights station. From there, the 7 train goes to Times Square or the E/F/M/R trains go to other Manhattan stops. One MetroCard fare. No AirTrain at LaGuardia. Works with one bag. Q70 schedule:
https://new.mta.info/document/9171
**Yellow Taxi. $50-70. Takes 25-45 minutes.** Unlike JFK, LaGuardia taxis are metered, not a flat rate. Expect $35-55 on the meter plus $6-10 tolls and 15-20% tip. During rush hour the meter keeps running in traffic, adding $15-20 to the fare.
**Uber / Lyft. $25-75. Takes 25-45 minutes.** Cheaper than JFK because the distance is shorter. Same surge pricing applies during peak hours and bad weather.
https://www.uber.com/ and
https://www.lyft.com/
**Private Car Service. $120-180. Takes 25-45 minutes.** Pre-booked, fixed price, driver waiting at your terminal. For LaGuardia I use NYC Transfer:
https://nyc-transfer.com . Fixed rate, no meter stress, flight tracking included.
## Newark to Manhattan
Newark (
https://www.newarkairport.com/ ) is in New Jersey, 16 miles from Midtown. Major United Airlines hub with many international flights.
The key issue: getting to Manhattan means crossing the Hudson River through the Lincoln Tunnel or Holland Tunnel. During rush hour (4-7 PM), tunnel traffic can add 30-45 minutes. A 30-minute midnight ride becomes 90 minutes at 5 PM.
**AirTrain + NJ Transit. $15. Takes 45-70 minutes.** The AirTrain (
https://www.newarkairport.com/to-from-airport/air-train ) connects terminals to Newark Liberty Airport train station. Then take NJ Transit (
https://www.njtransit.com/ ) to New York Penn Station. Trains run every 15-30 minutes. Solid option off-peak with light luggage.
**Yellow Taxi. $80-110. Takes 30-70 minutes.** Metered fare $50-75 plus $15-17 in tolls (turnpike + tunnel) and 15-20% tip. Tolls from Newark are higher than from the other airports because you cross state lines.
**Uber / Lyft. $45-120. Takes 30-70 minutes.** Base fare $45-70. Surge pricing plus tunnel traffic makes this the most unpredictable option during rush hour.
https://www.uber.com/ and
https://www.lyft.com/
**Private Car Service. $170-250. Takes 30-70 minutes.** Fixed rate, tolls included. For Newark I use EWR Car Service:
https://ewrcarservice.com . They handle Newark transfers only. Fixed rate from $172, all-in.
## Which Airport is Easiest to Get to Manhattan From?
**LaGuardia** is closest and cheapest by taxi ($50-70). But it has no rail connection, only a bus.
**JFK** has the best public transit link (AirTrain to subway) but is the farthest. The flat taxi rate makes cost predictable.
**Newark** has the most unpredictable travel times because of tunnel traffic. During rush hour, budget extra time no matter what you choose.
## Tips for First-Time International Travelers
**Book before you land.** Have the app downloaded, the booking confirmed, or at least know where to go when you exit the terminal. The arrivals hall at 11 PM when you're exhausted is not the place to start comparing prices.
**Tipping is expected.** Yellow taxis: 15-20% (the card reader suggests amounts). Uber / Lyft: tip through the app, 15-20% for airport trips. Private car services: check if gratuity is included in your price. If not, 15-20%. Public transit: no tipping.
**Avoid 4-7 PM arrivals.** Every option costs more and takes longer during rush hour. Flights before 3 PM or after 8 PM save time and money.
**Have some cash.** $50-100 in small bills covers tips and small purchases on your first day. ATMs are at all three airports. Credit cards work everywhere in NYC.
**Get a MetroCard or use OMNY.** If you plan to use the subway during your stay, you can tap to pay with a contactless credit card or phone using OMNY (
https://omny.info/ ) or buy a MetroCard at any station (
https://new.mta.info/fares ). Single ride: $2.90.
**Account for customs time.** International arrivals at JFK take 30-60 minutes from landing to exit. Tell whoever is picking you up.
