  • Green card for parents-question on using affidavits in place of marriage certificate

    Hi,

I am planning to sponsor green cards for my parents (who live in India) and have a few questions I am hoping to get answered by the forum members. I don't have an official birth certificate and my parents' marriage was also not registered

When I file I130 petition for my parents, can I submit affidavits for both my birth certificate (along with non-availability of birth certificate) and affidavits from my parents in place of a marriage certificate?

I am told that marriage certificates are now being issued in India even for older marriages that have not been registered at the time of the wedding. Will the immigration officer expect a formal marriage certificate or would affidavits be accepted? I am told that the process of issuing a marriage certificate for older marriages will take at least 30 days. I am trying to file the I130 petition before family based immigration is suspended by the current administration and am worried that 30 days might be a long time to wait

    Please advise

    Jay
