  • Nationality of US born child on Indian Passport

    Hi,

I am currently in the US on a H1B visa. We are expecting a baby at the end of this year.
I am planning to return back to India in a couple of years. Both me and my wife are Indian citizens and want our child to have Indian passport, as having a PIO card will put a lot of burden on the education costs in India.

I have read in many forums that the child can get Indian passport at an Indian consulate, and then avail all the benefits of an Indian citizen back home. If in the future, the child wants to come back to US for his/her education or career, then they can go to the US consulate and apply for US Passport. Of course, they will have to surrender their Indian passport then. This looks like a good option, as they can stay as long as they wish in India (like any other Indian citizen) and only apply for a US passport if they ever want to come to US.

I want to know what the nationality of the child (who is born in the US) will be on the Indian passport. Will they put it as 'INDIAN' or 'American'. This is important because, we have to fill out many application forms in the future that will ask for nationality. If it is going to be listed as American in the passport, will he be able to still avail all the benefits of an Indian citizen (govt jobs, admission at Govt colleges etc)?

If any one has got an Indian passport for their kid born in US, please help! Any suggestions are welcome.

    Thanks,
    Vamsi
