why spouse endorsement for my indian citizen wife's passport renewal?

Hello.

I am a US citizen. My wife is an Indian citizen. She is living in America through a Greencard she obtained through a K1 fiance visa.

Her Indian passport is about to expire. While we were looking to renew it said something bout adding my name to her passport as an endorsement.

Does anyone why we have to do this? Obviously she'll have her last name changed on her new passport but why does my name need to be on their as an endorsement? Seems kinda sexist...
