Birth registration for US born child

Hi,

I am staying in US on H1 and my wife H4. Recently we had a baby boy and my question is do we need to have birth registration for new born child at indian embassy before we apply US passport ? I heard its better to do that but not sure exactly what i need to do for that ? also, is there any benefit by doing birth registartion of my new born child at indian embassy before i apply for US passport ?
