I am medical doctor from India, came to US in December 2007 on an F2 visa, as a dependant on my wife's F1 visa. I am planning to switch my visa to J1 for a fellowship training for one year from July 2008.My wife had to go back to India for an emergency trip to visit her sick mother in last week of March 2008 and not yet back. Is it better to change my visa status here through USCIS(I dont want to get a travel permit right now) or Shall I go back to India and stamp a fresh J1; as my wife is not here and I came on here on a dependant visa of her's. Which one will be a safer option to avoid rejection? What is the usual delay for processing I-539 by USCIS?
