Can I maintain my H1b status if I work for my company in India location?

I am in the 3rd term and 8th year of my H1b using I140. My company is planning to send me to its India office for more than a year. Can I maintain my H1b status if I work outside the US? Do I have to apply for a new H1b if I come back to the US? If yes, will I have to be selected in the lottery? Also, I will need to apply for an extension next year. Will I face issues to get the extension approved if I apply it when I am in India? I will be receiving payroll in the US.
