Can I get SSN based on H1 Approval

Hi Experts,

Previously I was on H4 in USA. I applied for H1 and my application got selected in May 2008 and got appoved. My Approval has come into validity from Oct 2008. But I went to India in SEP 2008 and got H4 Visa renewal stamped in india in november since I have not received H1 Approval from my employer. Now I came to USA again.

My question is can i get Social security number based on H1 Approval or Do I need to go for COS ( from H4 to H1 ) ?

Unless your status is H1, you cannot get SSN.
