Would the consulate accept a change in plans after they requested more documents?

I applied for a study visa using a host as my accommodation, however the consulate has asked for more documents which, for various reasons, my planned host cannot provide. I am aware that they would originally have accepted a hotel/ Airbnb booking, but is there any chance they would accept it if I explain, change my plans, and provide them with a hotel booking instead of the host documentation? Or would they deem it odd and I’d likely to just be wasting money on a non refundable booking, only to have the visa denied for changing my plans?
