Interview was at 7:15 AM. We live nearby at Upland, California so we started at around 6:20. We reached by 6:45. There were about 60 people waiting in line outside as they hadn’t open the doors yet. After a security check we went to upstairs and submitted the Interview notification letter to the front desk. Within 2 mins my name was called and we were escorted inside by the officer who was going to Interview us. We entered his office and was told to sit. He asked for both our IDs. After he checked them, he told us to stand up, raise our right hand and take on oath to tell the truth.

We sat down again and he started the interview by asking me my spouses full name and date of birth. No problems there. Then he asked about when we met and when I came to the US. After that, he asked for any joint documents, so I gave joint bank accounts, joint credit cards, car insurance and a home lease agreement where both our names were. Then he asked to see my birth certificate and passport. Next he wanted to see our photos. We had made 2 albums (those digitally printed albums from Apple.com), one was of our wedding and the other one was of our travels around the world. He wanted to take a took at the travel one. After flipping through the photos quickly, he then asked us for recent tax returns and the updated medical form with lab report. He looked at both those documents carefully and said the word “excellent”. That calmed my nerves down.

There was a Game of Thrones toy on his desk, and I asked him a question about that. He was happy to see that I knew details about the show and had a fun discussion on it. That little conversation made me feel completely at ease and I was able to answer questions more comfortably from then on. In the next few minutes he started asking questions from the form we filed and asked YES/NO questions about drugs, terrorism, polygamy, crime etc from the form. To make sure I fully understood the questions, he even asked me what Polygamy means. That was a no brainer.

Everything was looking good, until after that he took out my spouses divorce certificate and said that there was information missing in it. He said we needed to get another copy with the missing information corrected. My heart sank as he issued an RFE right in front of us and handed it over to us. He gave us Till June 10 to mail the additional document back. I asked is there anyway we can come back today and submit it. He said, sure, if you can get the document from the court in time. He stood up, shook our hand and led us out. Everything was going so well, but this little RFE felt like a big blow to what seemed like smooth interview.

But we didn’t give up. Luckily my spouses divorce court was in San Bernardino, and it was just 20 minutes away. It was still 8:30 in the morning so we decided to give it a shot. In 15 minutes we were able to get a new copy of the document and rushed back to USCIS San Bernardino office beating the early morning traffic. At the office we tried to drop the RFE document off at the information center, but the officer sitting there asked us to go upstairs and give it directly to the officer who interviewed us. I couldn’t believe my ears. I was so happy to have had the chance to make this RFE go away to fast. So we went up, asked to meet the officer who interviewed us, and the front desk people told us to wait. In a few minutes he came out escorting the next people he had just finished interviewing after us. He was surprised to see us there with the RFE document so fast. He took a deep look at them right in the waiting room, and said everything is in order now. He shook our hands and said he will review the documents today and take a decision soon. He added that if he takes a decision, I can expect my Green Card in about 45 days. That sounded quite positive to me.

What a whirlwind of a day it was. Was like roller coaster ride. I am so glad we were able to complete our interview and also submit the RFE directly to our officer within 1 hour window of our interview while we were still fresh in my memory. I think I got a good vibe and maybe we might hear a good news very soon. But till then, the waiting game carries on. Its been 1 day since interview, no updates yet.

When there is a will…..there is a way ! Best of luck to everyone else !
