H1B in Vancouver
Hi,
This forum helped me a lot, so sharing key points of my experience (J to H1B) so that it may help someone else.

* Canada is the only option in North America for a change of visa status. Book your appointments well in advance (5-6 months), else book first and keep checking (everyday) for favorable dates, as cancellations occur and slots may open up
* If you are on a J visa it helps to get an advisory opinion on the applicability of 2 year home residency rule - it may save time later. You can get it by sending a letter to the department of state (no emails). Google : Home residency rule J Visa advisory opinion
* Vancouver consulate allows you to bring your child - no strollers, backpacks though
* There is a shop opposite Tim Hortons about a couple of blocks away that stores your bags for 5$
* Make sure that your photos are no more than 6 months old
* In my case, the consulate took 3 working days (including the day of interview) to provide stamped passport
* I took lots of documents but nothing was asked by the VO (Top 5 School, Fortune 5)

Vancouver has great food and is a beautiful city - spend time exploring it.

Cheers!
