Adjustment of Status - I-485

Hello everyone .. I filed for my gc Thur marriage 2016 I was a student then but I was out of status. My interview was cancelled that same year for reschedule. I had to wait since 2016 to 2019 to get my interview scheduled in Feb of 2019. Btw those years I filed for my ead yearly and it was renewed. Unfortunately for me my wife and I was seperated due to she having extra material affair and always assaulting me. I went to my interview myself with my lawyer and I explained to that what the situation was. So they said they will make a decision on my case. So last Wednesday I received a notification saying my case was denied. So I wait to get the official letter and it say during the time I filed I was in the us contray to d law that I didn't ave a status when I filled for my i485. Now am confused. I was a student in 2015 when I got married and I came here legally but I stop going to school before I filed official in 2016. It don't make sense to me. I can here with a visa. Please do anyone now someone that is been in the same situation? I need advise
