my experience so far.
Heya,

I want to add my two cents and hope my experience can help others as well. I will also update this upon arrival.

I have noticed that a lot of people are recommending that you schedule an appointment with a USCIS field office for the purpose of applying for AP. Be aware that field offices can only process expedited cases pertaining to immediate family (mother, father, brothers & sisters) not grandparents. I made the mistake of going that route which had me waiting for over a month and a half for the first available appointment. Not only was I informed by the person at the field office that they could not process my request, the application fee almost doubled in that time frame as well. So unless you're needing to see an immediate relative your best bet is to simply mail it in.

I mailed my application overnight on the 27th of December, and did not receive the notice form USCIS acknowledging that they had received my application until the 14th of January (by this point it was looking like they *were not* going to proceed with my case expeditiously which would have allowed me to travel before the inauguration of 45). By this point weeks turned into months and I had not received word of my application being granted and had essentially given up hope. However the Immigration Attorney I met with gave me the great suggestion of getting in contact with my legislators in Washington. I reached out to both my Senator and Representative and they were able to make an inquiry with USCIS on my behalf and within a week of having done so I had my AP in my hands. Your experience may vary with this but if you live in an area thats represented by pro immigrant legislators reaching out to them and having them contact USCIS on your behalf will be to your benefit. For example if you live in Oregon or Nevada, I highly recommend contacting the offices of Senator Wyden (OR) or Senator Cortez Masto (NV) for assistance.

I'm flying out this weekend and plan on returning the one after that. Once I'm back in The States I will add my experience in returning and going through customs.

Good luck to us all!
