Passport renwewal at SFO
I applied for passport renewal with Tatkal at SFO. My experience is that there is lots of old info out there. I had seen pages where it said that tatkaal process needed approval from consulate. I had called CGKS and they said no approval was needed. They charge for the call per minute but your first 5 minutes are free.

I first filled out the form on CGKS site. I followed their instructions PDF which said go make account on Govt passport site and fill in application there. This seems contradictory to what is said on the following post (which says don't make new account) https://www.immihelp.com/experience/438901-Renewal-of-Passport-Change-of-Address-India-Address-Change-of-Appearance-%E2%80%93-Consulate-of-India-SF.html. However, I followed instructions on the PDF and that worked fine.

My prior passports were issued in the US but at different consulates. I asked CGKS by e-mail if old passports were needed to be sent; they said no and asked for first and last pages to be sent. I sent more pages than they asked, which had important information like notes on previous passport cancellation, ECNR, etc. The rules on number of pages seem designed for new passports. Old passports had very different configuration on where info was listed.

Website asked for payment receipt to be sent. However, only option on site was for cashier's check. So, I had that made at Wells Fargo. No payment receipt was therefore on site. I asked CKGS over e-mail and they asked for payment order to be included.

Did notary with UPS. They charge $10 per notary stamp. FedEX did not do notarization.

Sent Aadhar card. Old passport did not have District listed in address. Address didn't really change though.

Old passport didn't have State written for birthplace (Delhi was not a state). So, was confused about whether that mattered or not.

Day 1: Sent Passport after 3pm.
Day 2: Passport received at CGKS. Application went through verification check and sent to Consulate on the same day.
Day 3: No updates. Passport at Consulate.
Day 4-5: Weekend
Day 6: Passport issued and at CGKS (in the evening).
Day 7: Passport picked up by FedEX (sat there for all day!)

So, the Consulate processed it in 2 business days per tatkal specification. Then it's traveling time between locations.
