Visitor Visa - Chennai - Single traveler - status approved
Hi Everyone,

I wanted to share my experience of my visa appointment in Chennai US Consulate. I did an ample of research before going for my visa interview for a single woman, working professional and age group 25-30 yrs on a visitor visa. Believe me, it is no rocket science and not that tough at all. If you are well prepared for your type of Visa it is a very smooth process. It is a myth that single woman/man in this age group get visa with lot of difficulty or it is very hard to get that visa. Well here is my experience.

My VAC appointment was on 7th Sept and interview was on 8th. First and foremost, learn to be very patent as the queues in the visa office could be long and tiresome and can drain all the energy out of you. Under any circumstances, do not carry anything more than your documents and if possible, carry them in a transparent plastic folder. It is easy for you and also for the visa office security. The less you carry, the better it is.

Tip#1 for DS160 - It is ok if you have made a mistake in your form, you can create a new form or edit the existing one. Keep your DS160 handy the moment you create the form. The link for DS160 is as below -

On 7th, it was the biometrics day and took about 30 minutes for the entire process. The actual biometrics take just 2 minutes tops. But, again the queue is long so be patient. Keep your appointment letter and DS-160 form ready all the times. These are the MOST IMPORTANT documents. Be sure that your DS-160 number matches to that in your appointment.

On 8th Sept, my appointment was scheduled at 9:30 AM, but these are just numbers on your appointment letter as you just need to show you have a real appointment scheduled. I reached the US Consulate office at 8:00 AM and I was astonished to see so many people standing in the queue already. I thought I was late but i wasn't and its always good to be on time for these appointments.

Tip - Dress in formals, it matters a lot. Again, do not carry anything with you apart from your important documents in your plastic transparent folder.

Tip#2 - If you are working, the documents you can carry - Your payslips for last 6 months, ITR for last three years to show your income flow, your official joining and relieving letters, your marksheets from school to college, if possible take the leave letter from your workplace signed by the HR. Take originals of all the documents. Place them separately and tag them so that it is easy for you to retrieve the documents quickly when asked for it.

After reaching the US consulate, there were three levels of security check and you cannot or rather should not avoid these security checks.

The last queue is to go through a window before you can actually reach the Visa officer, there they check for your visa and the sticky note on it saying you have an appointment, which is given to you after your biometrics. Once you are through this, you join the queue to meet the visa officer.

My personal experience with the Visa officer -

VO - Please step forward
Me - (I go forward close to the window and greet him)Good morning, how are you today?
VO - Very well, thank you. Please pass your passport.
Me - Sure (I hand over my passport)
VO - What is the purpose of your travel?
Me - For Toursim. (Yes that is all I said)
VO - Who do you know in United States?
Me - I have a friend, (friend's name) who lives in Boston.
VO - How do you know him.
Me - We were friends in India and now he is in Boston.
VO - Were you school or college friends?
Me -We met in college.
VO - What does your friend do in Boston?
Me - Answered accordingly.
VO - How long do you plan to visit for?
Me - 15 days.
VO - What do you do by profession?
Me - Answered
VO - Who is paying for your vists?
Me - I myself
Vo - How much do you earn yearly?
Me- Answered.
VO - Can you explain your job role to me?
ME - Answered.

He typed something for 30 seconds in his system and replied -

VO - Ma'am your visa is approved, you have a good day.
Me - Thank you and you have a good day too.
Vo - Thank you.

I left the window. He did not ask me where I am visiting and when I am visiting. Maybe, he didn't want to ask these questions that day.

Be courteous, truthful and polite and have a smile on your face. Be well prepared for your answers and have confidence. Do not give them a slightest hint that you are not a genuine candidate for Visa to US. It will work out well. All the best and let me know if this helps, or If I can answer any questions.
