H1-B renewal visa stamping experience from Mexico City in September 2016
I wanted to share my H1-B visa stamping experience from Mexico City, Mexico. A little bit about my situation:
1) I’ve been working for the same company for about 11 years.
2) My I-140 is approved.
3) My current US visa expired over a year ago so drop-box was not an option for me.
4) I took the appointment in Mexico because I have an India trip planned and appointment dates were not available while I would be in India

Since my US visa was expired I had to get a Mexico tourist visa ($36) to enter Mexico.

I stayed at a hotel close to the embassy (2 blocks away).

ASC appointment on Sept 26th at 7:20am.
The documents that were looked at were:
1) DS-160 confirmation
2) I-797 approval
3) Appointment confirmation
4) Passport
I was in and out in less than 30 minutes. Not many questions asked.

Visa appointment on Sept 27th at 8:00am. Reached there by 7:30am. There a lot of visa applicants in this particular consulate so I strongly recommend going early. Then the regular drill – getting in line, going through security, multiple people checking DS-160 and I-797 to confirm you are in the right line/place.

At the interview counter, I gave my passport, DS-160 and I-797 to the VO.
VO: Where in US are you heading to?
Me: City where I live.
VO: Who’s your current employer and how long have you worked for your current employer?
Me: Company name. I’ve worked for them for almost 11 years now.
VO: Tell me a little bit about your role?
Me: Described my job role.
VO: Do you have dependents – wife and kids?
Me: Yes, wife and 2 kids.
VO: What is their situation?
Me: Kids are US citizens. Wife is on an H-4 visa which is expired as well.
VO: How will your wife get her visa renewed?
Me: She will get her visa renewed from India. We are traveling to India in November. The dates in India were not available 4 months out and that’s why I’m getting my visa renewed from Mexico. She will stay in India longer and get her visa renewed for there. I would have preferred to get her visa renewed along with me but I couldn’t stay in India for that long and it’s hard to travel with 2 kids to Mexico for the visa appointment.
VO: When are you returning to the US?
Me: As soon as I get the stamped visa returned.
VO: Took my finger prints. Your visa is approved. The earliest I can have your visa ready is by September 29th at 3pm.

The only documents the VO officer looked at was my passport and DS-160 confirmation. No other docs were requested or checked.

I was back at the hotel by 8:30am.
