The randomness of applications - NYC
I would like to share my experience with the our N400 application to help explain that there seems to be very little rhyme and reason behind how applications are handled:
- N400 in Aug 2017 (in Queens, NY) after 8 years with Green Card for both
- Fingerprinting in Sept 2017 for both
- March 21, 2018 we both had interview scheduled within half an hour from each other on
- April 30, 2018 Interview Federal Plaza NYC.

So up to then everything was the same - even though we are different cases - I guess this was just a coincidence. My husband was scheduled a little later than me, waited (in a different room) for 30 minutes, was done in one hour. The officer told him he was approved and should wait to receive his oath letter. He waited another half hour and they handed him his oath invite for the ceremony on May 16. We both thought that was super quick (much quicker than expected) and were pleasantly surprised.

For my case, I waited over 4 hours (because the officer that got my case assigned was apparently backed up - I asked repeatedly but the man behind the window in Room 401 was not very helpful in reaching anyone who could help me). When I was called in after 4 hours wait, the interview was quick, the lady friendly, but I could see why processing cases may take her longer than some other officers. I received a recommendation for approval. Unfortunately, by then it was late in the day, so I did not get an appointment for the oath which was very disappointing. I asked my officer to add a note to my file to schedule my oath with my husband as we would really like to do this together, but I am very much afraid my case is stuck back in the big pile with all other cases and needs to go through another 1-3 month process.
Has anyone else recently had their interview at Federal Plaza and can give me an idea how long it may be for my oath to be scheduled? Thanks!

I also hope my story helps everyone understand that a lot the waiting time is just luck, and on whose desk your file ends up. Wishing everyone else good luck and a speedy process.
